• The British Academy


The British Academy offers grants for research abroad and collaborative research projects involving British and international scholars. It also offers conference funding both for British scholars travelling abroad and for British scholars organising conferences for international scholars in the UK . Awards are available for research at post-doctoral level in the humanities and social sciences.

• The Leverhulme Trust  

The Leverhulme Trust offers postgraduates Study Abroad Studentships for 12 - 24 months at institutions of higher education in Germany and other countries. The Leverhulme Trust also grants financial assistance to experienced researchers in the UK who wish to conduct a research project in the UK or overseas. Academic interchange grants to create or develop an effective research network are also made, funding the visits of scholars from groups of higher education institutions to and from the UK .

• The Royal Society  

The Royal Society’s International Travel Grants scheme facilitates collaboration between UK and overseas scientists in order to exploit opportunities for building lasting networks. This new scheme allows UK scientists to visit their German counterparts or for German scientists to travel to the UK . The Joint Projects scheme supports collaboration between two individuals or research groups, one in the UK and one in Germany , and runs for two years. In addition, the Royal Society has just launcheda new International Fellowship programme in collaboration with the British Academy and Royal Academy of Engineering: The Newton International Fellowships. This new scheme, which covers all areas of humanities, engineering, social and natural sciences, is open to early post-doctoral researchers from any country other than the UK , including Germany .
