DAAD Branch Office in London - German Academic Exchange Service

On Tuesday 30th June, we were delighted to celebrate a new chapter in German–British collaboration as the DAAD London office officially relocated to the @goetheinstitut_london on Exhibition Road, South Kensington. To mark the occasion, both organisations, DAAD and Goethe Institut, hosted the panel discussion "Creating a Common Future: Strengthening German–British Ties through Academic Exchange, Culture, and Language", bringing together distinguished voices from academia, culture and international relations. The discussion could not have been more timely, as we celebrate the welcome return of the United Kingdom into the ERASMUS+ programme, as well as the one year anniversary of the signing of the Kensington Treaty. We were honoured to hear opening remarks from H.E. Susanne Baumann, German Ambassador to the United Kingdom @germanyinuk, Kai Sicks, Secretary General of DAAD, and Johannes Ebert, Secretary General of the Goethe-Institut. We were also delighted to welcome and hear from Andrew Mitchell CMG, British Ambassador to Germany @ukingermany, alongside colleagues, partners and friends from across the British–German network. Our sincere thanks also go to Professor @karen_leeder (University of Oxford) and Scott McDonald (@britishcouncil) for sharing their insights, and to the prominent German author @annettedittert for expertly moderating the discussion. By bringing academic exchange, culture and language even closer together under one roof, we look forward to strengthening our collaboration and continuing to build lasting connections between the UK and Germany. On the weekend of the 22nd May, our DAAD-Lektor*innen, Ortslektor*innen, and Lehrassistenzen from German departments across the UK and Ireland gathered at @cumberlandlodge for our annual conference. This year’s theme: Collaboration. We were honoured to welcome the German Ambassador Susanne Baumann (@germanyinuk ), who discussed with us the implications of the Kensington Treaty and the value of democracy. Other highlights included inspiring contributions from Dr Aghogho Okpara (@itsaghogho ), the German Language Association, and Prof. Katrin Kohl. The events in 2025/26 ranged from language meetups and movie/board game nights, to visits to study fairs and planning readings by German authors. We would like to give our heartfelt thanks for all the hard-work, passion and dedication to promoting study in Germany that our current Young Ambassadors for 25/26 have displayed. 👏 We’re looking for undergraduate and masters students who have studied or interned in Germany to share their experiences and promote study and scholarship opportunities. Applications are open until 29th May. All successful Young Ambassadors will be invited to a two-day workshop in London at the end of August (from the 20th to the 22nd) travel and accommodation covered! Study in Germany – discover Lüneburg! The atmosphere in Lüneburg is very much like that of other German cities dating back to the Middle Ages – old, magnificent buildings and narrow alleyways. You can walk or bike to most places in town, and if you ever long for that big-city feeling, Hamburg is just a half an hour away. As you stroll down the narrow streets of Lüneburg that date back to the Middle Ages, you can’t help but notice the many old buildings in town. Lüneburg was once a very wealthy city thanks to its salt industry, and salt was a very valuable commodity back then. That explains why there are so many magnificent houses and villas here. Presenting 'Oxford Dodo Extinction Dada: Poetry workshop with Berlin-based poet Mikael Vogel'. In a poetry workshop centered around the current extinction crisis and animal ethics, poet Mikael Vogel from Berlin will talk about the Oxford dodo and the London dodo and invite participants to write about them. Vogel’s poetry collection ›Dodos auf der Flucht. Requiem für ein verlorenes Bestiarium‹ [›Dodos on the Run. Requiem for a Lost Bestiary‹] (Verlagshaus Berlin 2018) is currently in its fourth printing and is considered to have changed how animals are to be looked at and written about in German poetry. Mikael Vogel has published seven poetry books and has widely been recognized with literary prizes. A selection of his poetry with English translations was published digitally by Versopolis in 2019. This event has been organised by our Young Ambassador in Oxford, Joanna Wang @erurainax, alongside the Oxford Comparative Criticism and Translation research centre @occt.ox and Exeter College @exetercollegeox. On Tuesday 14th April, the DAAD London office was delighted to host an enlightening and thought-provoking panel discussion titled: “AI Safety, Security and Innovation in the Context of Regulation from an Anglo-German Perspective”. The event was attended by DAAD Alumni and DAAD scholarship holders in London who contributed to the lively exchange on this most relevant topic. We’d like to thank the representatives of the Munich Centre for Machine Learning that attended the discussion and those that sat on the panel, Prof. Dr. Björn Schuller (Principal Investigator at MCML), Prof. Dr. Daniel Rückert (Director at MCML), as well as Dr. Emily Sullivan, senior lecturer (Philosophy of AI and Machine Learning, Ethics of AI at the University of Edinburgh) and Kir Nuthi (Head of AI and Data at techUK). Thank you also to Kelly Zhang, assistant professor in statistics at Imperial College London for expertly hosting the discussion. Finally, we would also like to give a big thanks to the Goethe-Institut London for kindly providing the venue, to Stein's Berlin for catering the event and to The Office of the Free State of Bavaria in the United Kingdom for their support.

Lots to report from Galway! A big thank you to our Young Ambassador at @universityofgalway Luke Butterfield, for organising and hosting an information event on studying in Germany and the role of a Young Ambassador, with talks by the DAAD London office, the DAAD lecturer in Galway, Antonia Musolff, and representatives of the translation service Context. In the evening followed an incredible performance of ‘Der Besuch der alten Dame’. Directed by Antonia Musolff and DAAD language assistant, Nura Alwani.
